Sex Education is back for its fourth and final instalment this September and we still haven't come to terms with the fact that we're going to have to say goodbye to Otis, Maeve and the rest of the gang.

In case you missed it, season 4 of Netflix's Sex Education was revealed to be its last earlier this year when series creator Laurie Nunn announced the news in an open letter to fans.

In the letter, Nunn explained “We wanted to make a show that would answer some of the questions we all used to have about love, sex, friendship, and our bodies. Something that would have helped our inner teenagers feel a little less alone. It's been overwhelming seeing how the show has connected with people around the world, and we hope it's made some of you feel a little less alone too.”

Why won't there be a Sex Education season 5?

Put simply, Nunn felt like everyone's stories had "organically" resolved themselves.

"In my mind I always felt like I could just write these characters forever and ever. Letting them go has been painful and I think I'm still processing that. But it happened very organically: when we did the writers’ room for season four we didn't set out for it to be the final series," she explained.

In the open letter to fans, she added “This was not an easy decision to make, but as the themes and stories of the new season crystallised, it became clear that this was the right time to graduate." And while we're gutted to not be getting any more seasons of the show, we see where she's coming from. With many of the show's characters now out of their teenage years and taking on new roles, it makes sense to tie up loose ends now.

So while we won't be getting Sex Education season 5, can we at least hold out hope for a spin-off? Here's everything we've heard from Nunn herself on the season 4 ending and scope for a new iteration of Moordale.

Will there be a Sex Education spin-off?

While nothing has been confirmed, we remain hopeful following a conversation in which the show's creator Nunn told Netflix Tudum that although she planned on “taking a break and thinking about other things”, Moordale "is a really rich world, and writing about teenagers is always a lot of fun. So, I think that there’s always potential for more to be explored in that world."

Honestly, at this point, if we can get any more Sex Education goodness, we'll take it.

How does Sex Education season 4 end?

The final season opens with Otis (Asa Butterfield) and Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) setting up a new sex clinic at Cavendish Sixth Form College. Meanwhile, Otis finds himself grappling with the issue of distance between him and Maeve (Emma Mackey) who has left for the US to study at Wallace University.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, the show's creator said "I’m hopeful that there’s a bittersweetness to [the ending], and that there’s everything people want in there, even though it might not be wrapped up completely perfectly.”

In the meantime, enjoy reliving the perfection that is the Sex Education season 4 trailer below.
