Nine U.S. Presidents Who Loved Boating
P
residents and boats go way, way back. From 1880 until 1977, nearly every president had the privilege of using the official White House yacht. However, President Jimmy Carter ultimately decided to sell the “Sequoia.” But the USS Despatch, Dolphin, Sylph, Mayflower, Potomac, Sequoia, Williamsburg, and Honey Fitz all came before then!
2. Ulysses S. Grant Because he was President during the Reconstruction period, Grant didn’t have much time to be leisurely boating during his term. But, after leaving office, he went on a boat world tour with his family for over two years. Tracking was challenging back then, but historians estimated they traveled to over 26 countries by boat!
In honor of Presidents’ Day, this blog post will dive into the fascinating history of presidents who have enjoyed boating. Discovering which presidents own boats is pretty intriguing – it shows that they’re just people with hobbies, like us!
3. Theodore Roosevelt The USS Mayflower, once a warship, found a new role as a presidential yacht, all thanks to President Theodore Roosevelt. And some significant history went down on that ship. Guess where the talks to end the RussoJapanese War took place? Right on the Mayflower! It’s not surprising he conducted business on a boat, given his strong focus on strengthening the Navy during his presidency.
Through the Years: Which Presidents Owned Boats? Presidential yachts had the potential to serve diplomatic purposes in addition to transporting the Commander-in-Chief. However, people often used them for enjoyment – or fishing! And some of the presidents who owned boats have a fascinating history behind them. 1. Abraham Lincoln President Abraham Lincoln was the first (and only) U.S. President to hold a patent. Oh, and guess what? It was for boating! In 1849, he secured a patent for a nifty device to help vessels navigate over shoals. Additionally, Lincoln was avidly interested in the boats he used for transport and enjoyed examining designs for naval ships.
4. John F. Kennedy JFK was no stranger to navigating vessels during his lifetime, from boyhood to his presidential years. He spent his childhood sailing around the ports of Massachusetts and ended up leading boats with troops during World War II. And he even celebrated his last birthday aboard another presidential yacht, the Honey Fitz. 5. Franklin D. Roosevelt Fun fact: President Franklin D. Roosevelt cleverly chose to make his first major appearance after the Democratic convention
while he was standing on a boat. He was known to have loved fishing – especially after his polio diagnosis. Angling and sailing became hobbies he could easily enjoy once his health declined. 6. George H.W. Bush The 41st President, George H.W. Bush, had a lifelong passion for boating. In fact, he’s known to have loved speedy vessels! Throughout his life, he had quite a collection, including a 28foot Cigarette and a 38-foot Fidelity V. He even made it into the International Game Fish Association’s “Fishing Hall of Fame.” Entertaining Stories of Presidents Who Enjoy Boating Presidents who have enjoyed boating have had some fascinating stories on board – beyond using them for leisure or transportation. 7. Grover Cleveland Did you know that Grover Cleveland once underwent a tumor removal surgery on a boat? He did it because the U.S. economy was down in his second term (and feared that his health issues would cause concern). So, he spent four days on board to avoid public panic. The surgery was successful, and nobody knew of it for years. 8. Barack Obama Our 44th president, Barack Obama, is well-known for being an avid boater and watersports enthusiast. It’s not surprising,
given his upbringing in Hawaii and Indonesia! In the early years of his presidency, he often took his family on boat excursions to discover new places, like the Gulf of Mexico. More recently, he has been paddleboarding with his family in Hawaii, flyfishing in Yellowstone, and taking boat rides with well-known stars like George Clooney. 9. Woodrow Wilson Woodrow Wilson is on the long list of presidents who own boats, and he even courted his second wife (Edith Bolling Galt) on the USS Mayflower. While World War I was raging, Wilson famously expressed his fondness for his boat, which provided a muchneeded escape from people’s overwhelming pressures and demands. So, Which U.S. Presidents Were True Seafarers? As it turns out, boating is a popular hobby among U.S. presidents! Back in the day, boats offered peace and practical travel. Today, it is more about unwinding and discovering the various activities that boating can offer.

3 pounds medium stone crab claws, cooked and chilled 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup rice wine vinegar 1/4 cup honey 1/2 cup orange or tangerine juice 8 hearts of palm, fresh or canned 1/4 cup red onions, thinly sliced 1/4 cup red bell peppers, roasted, thinly sliced 1/4 cup yellow bell peppers, roasted, thinly sliced 2 medium oranges or tangerines, peeled and sectioned 1/4 cup fresh tarragon leaves, chopped 2 cups fresh spinach, finely chopped 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/4 cup rice wine vinegar 2 tablespoon fresh parsley, finely chopped
Directions: Crack claws; remove shell and movable pincer, leaving the meat attached to the remaining pincer. Set aside. In a small saucepan, combine the sugar, vinegar, honey and orange or tangerine juice. Bring to a boil and cook until thickened to syrup. Remove from heat, cool and set aside. Slice hearts of palm into thin strips. In a bowl, combine the hearts of palm, onions, peppers, orange or tangerine segments, tarragon and spinach. Dress salad with olive oil and vinegar; toss until moistened. Serve salad in the center of each plate with stone crab claws arranged around the edge. Drizzle the honey citrus sauce over all and garnish with chopped parsley. Serve extra honey citrus sauce on the side.

with Captain Ray Markham A Spring Fling is Right Around the Corner Spring is rapidly approaching but there will still be several more weeks of unsettled weather with cold fronts and windy weather. Recently catches of snook have been increasing as the warmer days bring these fish out of their cold weather haunts onto the shallow flats near mouths of creeks and canals. The season reopening of snook on March 1 has a lot of folks getting ready by spooling fresh line on reels and getting some new lures or terminal tackle. The lures I choose when I target snook, reds, or trout will depend on where I am fishing. Many residential canals with depths over 8 feet have been holding these fish. My first choice of lures would be either a DOA ¼-ounce Shrimp in the night glow color or a CAL Jig with a night glow-colored Shad tail rigged on a ¼-ounce chartreuse jig head. These deeper areas can be fished slowly and methodically with these lures. If I’m targeting big trout, I might find them around the mouths of canals or creeks where needlefish will stage up on the outgoing tides. Soft Plastic Jerk baits such as the MirrOlure Provoker, MirrOlure Lil’ John XL, and
the CAL 5.5 Jerk Baits are great imitators of this forage. If you’re going for numbers, it’s tough to beat the DOA Deadly Tandem. As water temperatures reach the upper 60s and low 70s nearly all species in our region become very active as metabolic rates soar. Fish will begin feeding in all levels of the water column, but surface feeding might be the most common, particularly around periods of moving water and barometric pressure changes. Peak air and water temperatures will be later in the afternoon between 3 and 4 pm. Days surrounding the full moon on February 24th and the new moon on March 10th should produce some banner tides for fishing for snook and trout. Morning bottomedout tides during these periods can produce some excellent red fishing scenarios. Baitfish are scarce inside Sarasota, Terra Ceia, Tampa, and Boca Ciega Bays at present. You’ll find a few bait schools off the beaches if you look hard enough. But for now, live shrimp or cut bait like ladyfish or mullet are good choices for snook, redfish, or big trout. This might be the best time to target sheepshead if

Fly anglers had some action with trout, pompano and snook at night. Keith McClintock, from IL, fished a couple of days in Gasparilla Sound near Boca Grande with me, catching and releasing reds and several nice trout on CAL jigs with shad tails. Stephen Liska, from Naples, joined him on one of the trips and also got in on the action with redfish. Keith also had similar action with several reds and trout on another trip in Sarasota Bay. Alan Sugar, from MI, fished a couple of trips in Sarasota Bay with me recently. He caught and released a nice pompano on a Clouser fly on one of the trips. He was joined by Joel Sugar, from IL, on another trip and they had some action with trout on CAL jigs with shad tails and Clouser flies. Winter residents, Jerry Poslusny, from Palmetto and Rich Hunter, from Longboat Key, had some action with snook on flies

Bridges, piers, jetties, docks, seawalls, rock piles, and just about any kind of rubble inshore are holding these fish while they spawn. They are the one fish that when you find days that you might rather stay in bed because of the weather, will cooperate. They seem to be immune to bad weather and stirred-up water conditions. The availability of live shrimp makes getting bait easy, but if you want to fill your cooler with some sheepies, few baits will outfish live fiddler crabs. You can use sand fleas, but they seem to be a rarity these days on the beaches. However, frozen blanched sand fleas are an option. At the same time, black drum are dock dwellers that share the pilings with sheepshead. Enjoy these last days of winter. It won’t be long before the sweating begins. As a reminder to anglers new to the area, the region continues to rebuild fish stocks after several years of red tide fish kills. Consider taking only what you need for a dinner or two and release the rest. ‘Til then…I’ll catch ya later.

Captain’sCorner with Captain Mike Schulze On Saturday morning, Tania and I were excited to go fishing. My exploration on Friday was not the most successful, but we had hope for better luck today. At 6:30 am, we arrived at the dock, greeted by a beautiful sunrise and high hopes.

As we left the marina heading to our first spot, Tania and I were amazed at the sun rays breaking through the clouds. We started fishing near the Causeway Cover Marina but didn’t even get a bite. However, we were treated to a show of six dolphins swimming nearby. Next, we tried the Smithsonian dock. Tania caught a small mangrove snapper, and I caught a tiny jack crevalle. Even though it wasn’t much, Tania was happy to have finally caught a fish. We fished here for about an hour with only a few more fish caught but nothing we could bring home.
At this point, we ran to where Keir and I caught some sheepshead the day before. With Tania being my lucky charm, I was hopeful we would catch a few today. Unfortunately, we only caught a few short mutton snapper. I had one more area in mind, which we have caught sheepshead in the past. We moved to the open area south of Harbor Isle and tried a few different spots. This spot proved to be more fruitful. We started catching lane snapper immediately. Most of them were short; however, there were a few 9-10-inch ones, which promptly went into protective custody. Tania even managed to land an 18-inch sheepshead. We ran out of bait around 11 am and returned to the dock.

Palm Beach and Jupiter inshore report Gradually! Strong cool fronts are spreading their timeline, allowing for southeast winds and warmer weather. Hopefully we get back on track with warm weather patterns and less cool fronts that pack a punch.
structure. A plethora of species are abundant on rock piles and pilings. Jigs with shrimp and metal jigs have produced snapper, drum, mackerel, grouper, snook, grunts, and many other species. Great action for those looking for nonstop hook ups, a ton of fun for kids and families.
Back bays and canals have been excellent locations to target snook. The snook are cruising the mangrove shorelines in search of minnow pods. Rapala X wrap and Doa 3 inch shad tail, excellent baits to entice snook to strike. Common snook and fat snook have been the prevalent species, anglers have been catching. A few swordspine snook have been caught as well.
Little bit of an uptick in the warm weather the past week brought warmer water temperatures. Cool fronts have been staggered allowing for calm conditions in morning wind picking up an afternoon. Lots of action this past week for a wide variety of species.
Anglers, looking for great topwater action the jack crevelle and bluefish have been very active along channel edges. Bluefish up to 10 pounds are aggressive, breaching the surface, striking Rapala skitter walks worked at a medium pace. These fish are schooling, so at times multiple fish are trying to strike the lures or a lure in the fishes mouth coming boat side. Anglers looking to fish bottom

Bluefish schools continue to dominate, anglers are enjoying awesome top water action using Rapala skitter walks for these aggressive fish. Treasure Coast Overall, we didn’t catch as much as we hoped, but we were happy to bring home some fish, especially the sheepshead . Our fishing trip taught us to be patient and to enjoy nature’s beauty, even when things don’t go as planned. Southeast Coast has been 12 to 15 inches Anglers looking to target linesiders, snook are still abundant along mangrove edges, docks and sea walls. Live bait and rapala x raps, excellent baits to get the strike. Common and fat snook have been the dominant species, snook have been ranging in size 18 to 28 inches. Rock piles and drop offs great areas to get anglers on a plethora of species, snapper, grouper, jacks, croaker, drum and many other species, all being caught around structures. The outgoing tides are pulling more water due to negative tides, this triggers fish to feed heavily on shrimp and DOA 3” shad tail worked along the bottom.
